Mum, Dad, that’s me! Personalised storybooks for children

There are many ways to capture special moments with your children as they grow older. You can keep a photo album off or online. You can periodically measure your children’s height and mark it in pencil on the wall. You can also keep a scrapbook or baby book with photos and mementos.

For our nearly 3-year-old daughter Hannah, we do all of that and more! What more could there be? To celebrate her first birthday, my husband Chris and I bought a personalised storybook that includes photos of Hannah and her name incorporated into the story.

Big firsts

Just as all first-time parents experience, Hannah’s first year of life was full of joy, humour and fear. To capture all of that, we ordered the custom-titled Now Hannah is One from It’s Your Story, which combines visuals and notes to document her progress. It is similar to a scrapbook, but with much more of a storyline.

Hannah’s face appears 12 times in the photos and illustrations to mark her big firsts, such as the first time she crawled, went to the park, and clapped. Her name also appears 22 times. We included fun memories in the book, such as when we dressed her up for Halloween as a lady bird or when she helped her mummy (or rather mummy helped her) stir the batter for my famous banana chocolate cake. We also included more serious moments, such as when she was hurt for the first time, falling and badly scraping her ear.

The book is tied together by a narrative of comments and loving messages from us. We hope that she will enjoy looking at this memoir of sorts when she is older as much as she enjoys it now.

Holiday gift

The personalized storybook makes a great holiday gift for children. In fact, we gave one to our 4-year-old nephew Owen for the holidays last year called SuperSox and the Vanishing Teddies. In the action-packed book, he stars as superhero Supersox who must track down who is stealing the children’s teddies. Owen oohed and aahed at seeing himself blast through walls and fly through the sky. Hannah was also wowed by seeing her cousin appear in a book!

We also plan to give Hannah another storybook this year for the holidays, and we are leaning towards a Christmas-themed one called Where’s Hannah. It would be nice to add it to our collection of holiday stories!
