Staying positive as a working mum

With everything that we working mums must juggle, staying positive can be difficult. When you’re tired, stressed, and haven’t had any me time in ages, of course it’s hard to maintain a good attitude!

But it’s important to fight negativity because negative thinking can easily grow into negative situations, which can translate into unnecessary problems for you to deal with. Moreover, negativity affects your happiness, and an unhappy mum means an unhappy family.

On the contrary, positive thinking can have beautiful results. It’s a skill that takes some time to learn (at least, it did for me!), but with a little practice it can become second nature.

Working mums, stay positive! Tips for maintaining a good attitude

Tips for staying positive as a working mum

Smiles and kindness

No matter how sad you feel about a situation, smiling is a great way to alleviate stress and help change your frame of mind for the positive. Also, try finding the humour of the situation and laughing about it.

If you are just too glum to force yourself to smile, try to surround yourself with smiling, positive people who will make you feel better about the situation. Avoid people who only have negative perspectives to offer, at least when you are vulnerable to their negativity.

Acts of kindness are another way to get yourself out of a negative rut. For example, we live on the same street as an elderly man who can’t always make it to the supermarket, so I regularly check in with him when I go shopping to see if he needs anything. When I’m feeling good, doing this favour for him is simply a bonus for my mood, but when I’m feeling down, it can really turn my poor attitude around.

Thank-yous and yoga

For times when I really need some perspective, I like to make a list of all the things I am grateful for. One of my recent lists included my two sons Jack and Rodger, my husband, my job that I love, the Thai green curry that I ate for lunch, and the fact that I saw my sister over the weekend.

For some of my friends, meditation and yoga are effective ways to fight off negativity. These two techniques encourage you to control your breathing, which in turn helps you to relax your mind and alleviate stress. One of my good girlfriends also uses this mantra for those moments when she feels particularly down: “Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become your character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”
